Summary: With the renewed interest in cultivating botanical species, members of the large genus Bulbophyllum are slowly finding their ways into the greenhouses of orchidophiles. The new species described here are two good examples not only for enhancing the variation in hobbyist's collections, but also for producing flowers worthy of awards.

Zusammenfassung: Mit dem wiedererwachten Interesse an botanischen Arten finden Mitglieder der großen Gattung Bulbophyllum langsam ihren Weg in die Gewächshäuser der Orchideenliebhaber. Die hier beschriebenen neuen Arten sind zwei treffliche Beispiele für die Erweiterung der Hobbysammlungen. Ihre Blüten sind eine Auszeichnung wert.

Planta epiphytica, rhizomatosa; pseudobulbis dissitis, ovoideis, rugulosis; foliis ellipticis, rotundatis emarginatisque, glaucis; inflorescentiis brevibus; floribus carnosis, cruentis; sepalo postico elliptico, cucullato; sepalis lateralibus inter se conniventibus, cymbiformibus, oblique elliptico-falcatis, acutis; petalis e cuneata basi rhombeis, acutis, margine superiori valde undulatis; labello cordato-ovaro, obtuso, disco biggiboso hispidulo; columna brevi in pedem longam, apice hamatam producta; clinandrio utrinque dentibus 2, triangularibus ornato; ovario pedicellato cylindrico.

Epiphytisch, bis 15 cm groß; Rhizome kurz; Pseudobulben eiförmig, teilweise eingehüllt von zerschlissenen Niederblättern, im Alter runzlig, bis 3 cm lang und 2 cm breit in lebendem Zustand, einblättrig; Blatt elliptisch bis länglich elliptisch, an der Spitze abgerundet bis stumpf, an der Basis zusammengefaltet und sitzend, blaugrün, bis 12 cm lang und 3,5 cm breit; Infloreszenz 1- bis 2blütig, Blütenstiel kurz, bis 2 cm lang; Brakteen bootsförmig, zugespitzt, bis 12 mm lang; Blüten sehr fleischig, recht dunkelkastanienrot, klaffend; dorsales Sepalum kapuzenförmig, konkav, breit elliptisch, zugespitzt, 25-28 cm lang, 17-20 mm breit; laterale Sepalen in natürlicher Haltung konvergierend, tief bootsförmig, mit einer nach unten gewandten Spitze, schiefelliptisch, sichelförmig, zugespitzt, 25 mm lang, bis 15 mm breit; Petalen aus keilförmiger Basis, rhombisch mit scharfer Spitze, fleischig, die Spitze mit einem breiten, gewellten Saum versehen, der ein umgekehrtes V bildet, der Zwischenraum ausgehöhlt, entlang der sich verzweigenden Adern stark mit Protuberanzen bedeckt, 20 mm lang, 12 mm breit; Lippe fleischig, herzförmig-umgekehrt eiförmig, stumpflich, mäßig gebogen, an der Basis ausgehöhlt, die Ränder nach oben gewendet, in der Mitte mit 2 parallelen Rücken, vollkommen mit kurzen, steifen Haaren besetzt, Spitzenhälfte der Lippe dicht bedeckt mit sich verzweigenden Adern, bis 13 mm lang und7 mm breit; Columna kurz, ziemlich gedrungen, verlängerter Fuß mit einerfreien, hakenartigen Spitze; Klinandrium vorne und hinten mit 2 dreieckigen Zähnen; Konnektiv scharf zugespitzt, die ganze Columna 5 mm hoch und 10 mm lang, die nach oben gewendete hakenförmige Spitze 4 mm lang; gestieltes Ovarium zylindrisch, bis 2,5 cm lang.

Typus : Papua Neu Guinea, ohne genauen Fundort, kultiviert von Mrs. Ralph LEVY, Nr. 2507 A. (Holotypus: AMES); weitere Belege von Belim River, 1600 m, Sammler BRASS Nr. 11649 (AMES).

Diese neue Art ist eine nahe Verwandte von Bulbophyllum macrobulbum J. J. Smith, auch von Neu Guinea und Irian, aber unterscheidet sich hauptsächlich durch die geringere Größe der Blüten, andere Färbung und die Struktur der Columna. Die Beschreibung wurde nach lebendem Material angefertigt. Andröe MILLAR publizierte in ihren „Orchids of Papua New Guinea" auf S. 50 ein Foto dieser neuen Art unter dem irrtümlichen Namen Bulbophyllum fletcherianum Rolfe.
 

Epiphytic plants up to 15 cm tall; rhizome short; pseudobulbs ovoid, partially enclosed by decomposing cataphylls, rugulose with age, up to 3 cm tall and 2 cm wide in living condition, one leaved; leaf elliptic to oblong-elliptic, rounded to slightly retuse at apex, conduplicate and sessile at base, somewhat glaucous, up to 12 cm long and 3.5 cm wide in living condition; inflorescence one- to two-flowered, peduncle short, up to 2 cm long, bract cymbiform, acuminate, up to 12 mm long; flowers very fleshy, rather deep maroon, ringent; dorsal sepal concave-cucullate, broadly elliptic, acute, 25 to 28 mm long, 17 to 20 mm wide; lateral sepals connivent in natural position, deeply cymbiform with a reflexed apex, obliquely ellipticfalcate, acute, 25 mm long, to 15 mm wide; petals from a cuneate base, rhombic, acute, acuminate tip, fleshy, the apical half broadly crenulate-undulate toward margins forming an obverse V, excavate in between, heavily covered with protuber¬ances along the profusely branching veins, 20 mm long, 12 mm wide; lip fleshy, cordate-ovate, obtuse, slightly curved, excavate at base, margins up-curved, in the Center provided with 2 parallel ridges completely covered with short bristly hairs, apical half of disc densely covered with profusely branching veins, up to 13 mm long and 7 mm wide; column short, rather stout, produced in an extended column foot with a free hamate apex; clinandrium provided in front and in back with two triangular teeth; connective sharply pointed; the whole column 5 mm high and 10 mm long, the upcurved or hamate tip 4 mm long; pedicellate ovary cylindric, up to 2.5 cm long.

Type: New Guinea without exact location, grown by Mrs. Ralph LEVY, no. 2507A. (Holotype: AMES). Additional speci¬men Balim River, 1600 m. altitude, coll. Brass no. 11649 (AM ES).

This new species is a close relative of Bulbophyllum macrobulbum J. J. Smith also from Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya (Dutch New Guinea), but differs primarily in the smaller size of the flowers, very different coloration, and the structure of the column. The description was prepared from living material. - Andreö MILLAR in her °Orchids of Papua New Guinea' published a photograph of this new species an page 50 under the erroneous name of Bulbophyllum fletcherianum Rolfe.

Epiphytische Pflanze; Pseudobulben mit Abstand, eiförmig, einblättrig, bis 3,5 cm lang, 2 cm breit; Blatt kurzstielig, elliptisch länglich, spitz oder stumpf, ziemlich fleischig, bis 20 cm lang und 4,5 cm breit; Infloreszenzstiel aufrecht stehend, etwas gebogen, einblütig; Blüten klein, etwa 2,5 cm durchmessend, blass cremefarben, innen purpur überlaufen mit etwas dunklerer, undeutlicher Aderung; dorsales Sepalum recht konkav, nach vorne gebogen, eiförmig lanzettlich, zugespitzt, bis zu 23 cm lang und 10 mm breit; laterale Sepalen nahe der Basis ziemlich aufgebläht ausgehöhlt, nach vorne ausgestreckt, an der Spitze nach rückwärts gewandt, schief eiförmig, zugespitzt, an der Basis abgerundet, bis 20 mm lang und 1 mm breit; Petalen in der natürlichen Haltung nach auswärts zeigend, die Sepalen überragend, in der Blüte dominierend (daher der Name), eiförmig länglich, zugespitzt, bis 17 mm lang und 7 mm breit; Lippe sehr fleischig, gebogen, herzförmig, apikal zugespitzt, unten mit einem deutlichen Kiel, zusammengefaltet, bis 8 mm lang und 7 mm breit; Columna kurz mit breiten bis zum aufwärts gebogenen Fuß herablaufenden Flügeln, ca. 12 mm lang; gestieltes Ovarium zylindrisch, 2,7 cm lang.

Typus : Thailand ohne genauen Fundort, eingeführt und kultiviert von Mrs. Ralph LEVY Nr. 1258 B. (Holotypus: AMES); auch Khao Sabap, Sammler SEIDENFADEN & SMITINAND (GT), Nr. 1607.

Die entzückende kleine Pflanze war ursprünglich als Bulbophyllum lobbii bei SEIDENFADEN & SMITINAND abgebildet, „The Orchids of Thailand" 3: 380, fig. 286, 1961. Lange Zeit waren wir mißtrauisch bezüglich der Identität der Pflanze auf dieser Zeichnung. Kürzlich erhielten wir frische Blüten, die uns ihren wahren Status erkennen ließen. Sie gehört zweifellos zur Verwandtschaft von Bulbophyllum lobbii zur Sektion Sestochilus, aber die Blüten sind viel kleiner, anders gefärbt, und die Form der Petalen, die an ein Paar ausgestreckter Arme erinnert, unterscheidet sie von allen Arten dieses Komplexes.

Epiphytic rhizomatous plants; pseudobulbs remote, ovoid, one leaved, up to 3.5 cm Jong, 2 cm wide; leaf with short petiole, elliptic-oblong, acute or obtuse, rather fleshy, up to 20 cm long and 4.5 cm wide; scape suberect, somewhat arcu¬ate, one flowered; flowers small, approximately 2.5 cm across, pale cream with purplish suffusion within, and with somewhat darker, obscure veins; dorsal sepal rather concave, forward arching ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, up to 23 mm long and 10 mm wide; lateral sepals rather gibbose-excavate at base next to column Foot, forward projecting with the apical part recurved, obliquely ovate, acute, rounded at base, up to 20 mm long and 11 mm wide; petals in natural position outstretched, much surpassing the sepals and dominating the flower (hence the name), ovate-oblong, acute, up to 17 mm long and 7 mm wide; lip very fleshy, arcuately curved, cordate, acute at apex, with a prominent keel beneath, conduplicate, up to 8 mm long and 7 mm wide; column short with broad wings decurrent into the upcurved foot, circa 12 mm long; pedicellate ovary cylindric, 2.7 cm long.

Type: Thailand without precise locality. Introduced and grown by Mrs. Ralph LEVY no. 1258 B. (Holotype: AMES); also Khao Sabap, coll. SEIDENFADEN & SMITINAND (= GT) no. 1607.

This rather delightful small plant has been illustrated originally as Bulb. lobbii by SEIDENFADEN and SMITINAND, "The Orch¬ids of Thailand" 3:380, fig. 286, 1961. For a long time we were rather suspicious about the identity of the plant in this drawing but not until recently have we received fresh flowers which helped us to ascertain its true scientific status. lt undoubtedly belongs to the relationship of Bulb. lobbii of Section Sesto¬chilus, but the flowers are very much smaller, are differently colored, and the nature of the petals which resemble a pair of outstretched arms, readily distinguishes it from all members of this complex.
